The "Understanding" (opinion)

Unfortunately, our culture still possesses a long-held and broadly-shared deeply seated historic "understanding" about the never-ending growing number of people who are innately (by some deity and/or gene) unchangeable with their inferior status. A caste-based view about humankind.

While passively acquired and re-enforced as well as internalized during the early years of development from the contexts of families - both immediate and extended - neighbors, play mates, school colleagues, social media and yes - fellow worshipers, even. This behaviorally based "understanding" was and still is the too frequent explanation justifying the Dominate/dominated social dynamic.

This dynamic was most successfully challenged by the highly focused and well organized Suffragettes' Vote for Women. Their success did not happen easily, quickly or gratuitously. The ability to influence and control events was (and still is) not generously shared by enough members of their challenged Dominate group. Altering this dynamic — in fact — alters power.

The frequently repeated pledge "...with liberty and justice for all" is the textbook example of the paradox with actual racial realities, also. It is even more pressing today (in different forms) then described in 1944, by Gunnar Myrdal's, "An American Dilemma." The critical intervening variable of e-witnessing exposes as well as provides a visual record of the paradox. This indisputable clarity — this evidence — compels reflection, discussion, action.

To reflect, to discuss, not to even mention action, is a most formidable challenge. Replacing long-held internalized beliefs/behaviors — the "understanding" if you will - is both an immediate and inherent threatening process. Even sharing the process with others for support, may be in and of itself, psychologically unsettling and physically discomforting. While replacing the "understanding" is vitally needed, any cultural alteration will also entail the altering of power– which may be the overriding fear-based threat.
